SUN ARAW LIVE - AUSTIN PSYCH FEST REVIEW

A “Ma Holo” opener began what became the strongest Sun Araw set I’d seen yet. Its creeping, tribal drum loop gradually became consumed by Stallones and accompanying guitarist Alex Gray’s interlocking helixes of twin solos. Afterwards, an impromptu remix of “Heavy Deeds” included an extended drum and bass intro that added suspense to their live staple. The coup de gras was a beautiful, noisy meltdown more akin to Alex’s work as Deep Magic— untethered, overwhelming, and after staff had probed them about five times to “stop!” What was really special about the set, however, was the potent chemistry between Cameron and Alex, easily Stallones’ MVP even amongst ringers like Diva and M. Geddes Gengras, other regulars in the S.A. Band. Even when it’s just the two of them, Alex is like the fire to his ice: going by guts, rapidly getting wrapped up in the moment. When we spoke after the show, he showed me his blood-covered hand, smiled, and said “I’m bleeding. It hurts. Whatever.”
